poems for a funky friday

there was a girl

there was a girl, not made of stone
ensnared where shadows lie
but when they left her all alone
she found a way to fly

in secret whispers to herself
she learned of things to come,
of fairy tales, from off her shelf
and hippo songs to hum

and if you meet her, in the light
you’ll notice bouncy curls
and fairy things that wake at night
protecting baby girls

but do not judge her, just depart
go quickly, from her charm
for nightmare things live in her heart
and she will do you harm

“ask me ‘what’s my best side?’ i stand back and point at you” — Big Sean

it’s time
for rabid, sunset, august heat
pleasuring of you
like a gulf coast swamp
itchy hot, damp where you touch
feeling your moist evening breath
lick the nape of my neck
and i return the favor
until we smell of three a.m.

under a scorching sun
all-night, mildewed love
you drip to me
needing my heat
but baby,
you done drained
my swamp
and i got church
in the morning

“Why kill you when I can teach you and get the same results?” — Lupe Fiasco

There You Were

there you were
though I almost missed
your smile
standing by the wall
where you left it

you tried to
secret it in smiles
of five year olds
with waist-length curls
but i found it there
as it barely fit her
little face

her giggles would hold
your laughter
so you thought
and there would be
no you, save the bits
you left in her

but I saw your smile
standing in the corner
by a well-worn pair
of pumps worn only
to work, and knew
your smile, right away
to be found
